Fine quality mahogany stick barometer, Gilbert & Gilkerson, Tower Bridge, London. c.1800.

The edge moulded case is veneered in the finest figured mahogany to the front and outlined with ebony. The swan neck pediment sits above the lockable glazed door which protects the engraved silvered brass scale fitted with a manual vernier and signed 'Gilbert & Gilkerson, Tower Hill, London'. The concealed tube is fitted with a portable boxwood cistern behind the turned mahogany cistern cover.

(The partnership 'Gilbert & Gilkerson' is listed as working between 1793-1819. The Gilbert family of instrument makers were first recorded as working out of Postern Row, Tower Hill in 1717 and a 'Gilkerson & Macall' working again in Tower Hill in 1770. There appears to have been various partnerships involving the two companies until around 1830).
