A good 18th century early mahogany wheel barometer by the famous maker John Merry Ronketti.c.1790.
The round topped mahogany case is inlaid with fine marquetry paterae, the deep cross grained sides outlined with chequer stringing. . The inset silvered thermometer scale is well engraved with a Fahrenheit scale and fitted with a long spirit thermometer. The 8" silvered dial is elaborately engraved with flowered swags, marked in 1/10th's of an inch increments and engraved with the maker's name and address, 'J.M Ronketti, 180 Holborn , London'.
John Merry Ronketti was one of the leading group of the earliest Italian barometer makers, including Dominick Manticha, Joseph Somalvico and James Gatty, that migrated into England in the last quarter of the 18th century.
