Extremely rare Chippendale stick barometer by Batty Storr, York. c.1750.

An exceptional George II mahogany stick barometer following the design of Thomas Chippendale's Chinese furniture of the day. The scolled top is carved with a swirling feather styled moulding that sits below a carved and pierced finial of oriental design. The solid Cuban mahogany case is edged with a finely carved rope twist moulding that runs from the scolled top right down to the magnificent cistern cover. The cistern cover is exquisitely carved with floral patterns, egg and dart and rope twist lines and the stylised depication of hanging willow tree decoration often scene in Chippendale's Chinese designs.

The engraved silvered register plates with the weather indications on the left and engraved with the maker’s name, 'B. Storr / York / fecit' at the base with the pressure scale on the right having a vernier with elongated pointer. 

The exposed tube is fitted with a portable boxwood cistern concealed behind the cistern cover.

Batty Storr (1710-93) was an established clockmaker based at the Minster Gates in York. Very few examples of his barometers of this quality are known with the one at The Treasurer's House in York being the most prominent.

The Storr family was a famous clock making family, mostly Quakers who originated from Ostwick in East Riding then moving to Summercroft, Selby and later to York.  Marmaduke Storr was born in 1667 his youngest son from several children was Batty born 1710, died 1793.
